New technologies have rapidly and profoundly\naffected our societies, economy and politics in recent decades.\nGPS and digital cartography enabled new models of urban transport, company\nand work relationships. Voters are increasingly turning to the internet\nand to social networks for political information\nand to exchange their views. Fake news thus became\nviral and may have influenced the dynamics and outcomes of\nrecent elections. On the other hand, all Latin American\ncountries still continue to have their violent and poor corners to\nadminister. Inequality casts its shadow on rising violence, on the high cost of\npublic policy and the economy; and the geographical context, as conceptualized\nby Agnew, still matters! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a Research Group of Spatial Analysis of\nthe Latin American Political Science Association (ALACIP), our main\nobjective is to encourage the development of studies and research using\nthe broad list of methods and techniques of spatial analysis to\nunderstand political issues and to evaluate and find new solutions for public\npolicies. For this panel, ESPACIO ALACIP was able to coordinate a set\nof papers on four different Latin American countries, covering specific\norientations of young people\u00b4s political culture in three different Mexican states during\nthe past 2018 presidential\nelection, causes and local contexts of violence\nagainst women in Santiago de Chile, spatial dimensions of party\naffiliation and electoral behavior in Panam\u00e1, methodological issues of spatial\nanalysis applied to the Dominican Republic, and finally, two papers analyzing\nthe Brasilian Chamber of Deputies, one on gender and electoral geography in the\nnational 2018 elections, and the other on spatial evidences of distributive\npolicies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this panel, ESPACIO ALACIP was\nable to coordinate a set of four papers on Mexican and\nBrasilian Politics, covering a three years geographic observation project on\nparticipatory democracy in M\u00e9xico City, a proposal of a typology to better\nreflect the recent political renewal of the Brasilian National Congress, a\ncomparative analysis of the social, demographic and geographical dimensions\nof  PSL (bolsonaristas) and PT voting for\npresident in Brasilian last election, and finally, two studies relating\nsocio-economic development and poverty, as stable\nand spatially structured processes, with\nthe changing territorial dynamics of electoral behavior,  in Mexico and Brasil, to understand what a spatial\napproach provides to explain the links between both processes in comparative perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
