{"id":7436,"date":"2015-12-21T11:21:53","date_gmt":"2015-12-21T14:21:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alacip.org\/?p=7436"},"modified":"2015-12-21T11:35:45","modified_gmt":"2015-12-21T14:35:45","slug":"giga-doctoral-programme-prospective-doctoral-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alacip.org\/?p=7436","title":{"rendered":"GIGA Doctoral Programme, Prospective Doctoral Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The GIGA Doctoral Programme invites applications from <strong>Prospective Doctoral Students<\/strong> (<strong>Ref.-No. GIGA-16-01<\/strong>) to join the programme on 1 October 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>GIGA Doctoral Programme<\/strong> is a three-year structured programme for young academics, in which they can pursue their research and professional development, particularly in the field of comparative area studies (CAS). We strongly welcome international applications. The reconciliation of work and family life is of great importance to the institute.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">GIGA doctoral students are <strong>fully integrated into the GIGA\u2019s research process<\/strong> with a view to achieving excellence, individually and collectively. The training programme fosters their engagement with the GIGA\u2019s unique CAS approach and provides them with the necessary methodological and soft skills to pursue a career in academia and beyond. Through <strong>academic exchanges and field work<\/strong>, GIGA Doctoral Students engage with the \u2018GIGA regions\u2019, build their own networks, and collaborate with international experts. They are offered <strong>exposure to policy advice activities<\/strong> and expected to embrace the Leibniz Association\u2019s mission statement \u2018Theoria cum Praxi\u2019. Doctoral degrees will be awarded by one of our partner universities, dependent upon the affiliation\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0student\u2019s\u00a0first\u00a0supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Applicants\u00a0are\u00a0expected\u00a0to\u00a0fulfil\u00a0the\u00a0following\u00a0criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An excellent grade point average and a final degree (masters or equivalent) in political science\/international relations, economics, history or a related discipline.<\/li>\n<li>A high-quality project proposal that fits with the GIGA\u2019s research agenda. Priority will be given to projects with a cross-regional or a comparative area studies focus.<\/li>\n<li>Strong\u00a0command\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0English\u00a0language\u00a0(German\u00a0is\u00a0not\u00a0a\u00a0prerequisite).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Applications\u00a0including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The GIGA DP application form, stating contact details of two reference persons,<\/li>\n<li>a letter of motivation, a research proposal of 2000 words max. and an additional academic writing sample,<\/li>\n<li>a CV and simple copies of degrees and academic transcripts (BA, Diploma, MA),<\/li>\n<li>proof\u00a0of\u00a0English\u00a0language\u00a0skills,\u00a0and<\/li>\n<li>a\u00a0statement\u00a0about\u00a0intended\u00a0funding\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0duration\u00a0of\u00a0three\u00a0years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>should be sent by <strong>1 March 2016<\/strong> to <strong> Gabriele Tetzlaff<\/strong>, GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies, Neuer Jungfernstieg 21, 20354 Hamburg, Germany.
