Campaign finance failed in two-thirds of all elections in 2015\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n
Flawed and failed elections around the world are manipulated through vote rigging and corruption, intimidation and violence, according to an annual report released by the Electoral Integrity Project.Political finance is often a major problem<\/strong>. Malpractices undermine civic engagement, political accountability and faith in democracy. These problems arise despite the fact that each year the international community invests about half a billion US dollars to improve elections.<\/p>\n

The Electoral Integrity Project<\/strong><\/u><\/a> assesses which\u00a0elections across the world meet international standards, and has just released new evidence\u00a0in an <\/strong>annual report<\/u><\/strong><\/a> and dataset<\/u><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0The EIP is an independent research project based at the University of Sydney and Harvard University, directed by\u00a0Professor Pippa Norris.<\/p>\n

The EIP\u2019s new report covers 180 national parliamentary and presidential contests held from mid-2012 to end-2015 in 139 countries worldwide<\/strong>, including 47 countries that held national elections during 2015, and highlights issues that were salient in elections last year. The current dataset covers more than 88%\u00a0of all independent nation-states worldwide holding national elections.<\/p>\n

The project generates a 100-point Perceptions of Electoral Integrity (PEI) Index. \u2018Failed<\/em>\u2019 elections are defined as those which fall below 40 on any of the 100-point scales.<\/p>\n
