After the cycle of redemocratization that took place in the 1980s, most South American countries alternated between neoliberal periods and the strengthening of the so-called «progressive governments», where the main political parties of the region’s left and center-left were elected as alternatives to the neoliberal cycle, promoting public policies aimed at regional integration, multilateral instances and the diversification of commercial and political partners.
