Postdoctoral Research Fellow: WEALTHPOL – The Politics of Wealth Inequality and Mobility in the Twenty-first Century
The Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join a research team to work on an exciting new project directed by Professor Ben Ansell, the Project Investigator (PI), and supported by the European Research Council (ERC).
The project examines political causes and consequences of wealth inequality across the industrialised world. The project divides into three core work packages, which are to be accomplished over the life of the grant. The first two work packages are macro data collection exercises assembling cross-nationally and historically comparable surveys of wealth mobility outcomes and policies. The last work package focuses on the micro-foundations of attitudes towards wealth mobility using both laboratory and survey experiments.
The successful candidate will provide research support across all three projects though their own skillset and interests may fit more closely into particular areas. S/he will be expected to contribute to the running of the project as well as to co-author work with the Principal Investigator, and pursue their own related research agenda.
The post-holder’s duties will include assisting in compiling a cross-national database of wealth inequality and mobility, and to aid in disseminating the results of this work including the construction of an online open-access database. They will also be expected to develop a policy database of inheritance, gift, capital gains and other wealth-related policies, dating back to 1945 across the industrialised world. In addition, they will assist with the tendering, design, implementation and analysis of survey experiments to be conducted across six European countries.
The successful candidate will hold a doctorate in the field of political science, sociology, and economics or be close to completion of a PhD in a relevant subject. Applicants should have an interest in and strong understanding of wealth and income inequality, with the ability to use statistical software at an advanced level, with skills in data collection, management and analysis. In addition, they should have a willingness and ability to contribute to the dissemination of project results and to represent the project at conferences and external events.
This post if offered on a full-time basis, for a period of three years, to commence from 1 September 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.
