In collaboration with the International Journal of Urban Regional Research and Wiley-Blackwell Publishers, the Foundation for Urban and Regional Studies is organising a seventh international essay competition for the best essay on urban and regional themes by PhD students or scholars who have completed their PhD within a five year period.

A prize of £1,000 will be awarded to the winner. The winning essay will also be published in the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (IJURR). Since the publication in IJURR is a constitutive part of the prize, only unpublished papers are eligible.

The essay should be no longer than 7,000 words (including footnotes and bibliography) and be sent with a 500-word maximum summary. Essays exceeding 7,000 words will be automatically excluded. The essay must be written in one of the following languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish.

A note must be attached to the essay indicating the author’s full name, address, university or workplace (if any), date and place of birth, nationality, native language, e-mail, telephone and fax number(s), a short CV (maximum 100 words) and stating the essay’s word length.

Essays must be sent by 31 May 2015 to furs.competition@usp.br as an attachment in Winword format (.pdf files are not allowed.)

Unsuccessful entrants in the previous competitions are encouraged to enter again, but may not submit the same essay.

The essays will be read by two anonymous referees who will send their comments to Professor Eduardo Marques, who will organise a final round of judging by a panel of three scholars from sociology, political science, geography and urban planning backgrounds. The results will be made public and communicated to entrants by 31 March 2016.
